When I'm checking out Strats I always play the intro to this song to check out the "quackability"! Great tune.

Always wondered what guitar / amp combo that was I woulda though semi hollow into a a Vox.

Maybe dorky - but cool to me.

You mean someone has actually deciphered the lyrics???

^ yeah, they take some listening, but once you know the theme there are contextual clues that help fill in the garbled parts

The last stanza is the best, describing the first few seconds after shots ring out; the way I hear it is :

"The DA was pumping my left hand, and she was holding my right. Well, I told her, "Don't get scared, 'cause you're gonna be spared. And I gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend a living with a long tall woman in a black dress."

^ It definitely sounds like a 335-type / Vox combo to me. That distinctive thudding sound.

Funny, my Les Paul has an out of phase wiring you activate with a pull pot. By accident, I found out I can nail that sound. Not sure if that's technially what was used. Anyone know the guitar or rig?

Cool old tune, it seems to always goes over well the younger crowd too, and of course it gets the old-schoolers dancing.

I dunno, playing the middle-bridge pups clean on my Strat and Swart nail that tone to a T. I guess it could be a Gibson but it sure sounds Fendery to me.

Tough song to sing in the original key.

Interesting. I've always gotten a tone close with a Tele myself. But, cool that you got it with an LP! Great to see the fans of this tune!

I can honestly say that this was the first song I ever heard on the radio. And every time I hear it , it always takes me back in time. Thanks for the memories. And I have this song on my IPOD, and MP3 player as well.

I have always loved that song. Even moreso since "Just a 5 foot nine, beautiful, tall" accurately describes my wife.
I believe I've seen a video of the Hollies playing that song and Allan Clarke was playing a Telecaster. Sounds like a Tele to me.

The Hollies were pretty cool in general... and they still sound pretty relevant even by today's standards.

I thought it might be a Tele, but come to think of it, it has that semi-muted thing going on. Could be the hands or could be that old foam rubber mute that some of those 60's axes had.

Always liked the song, the band I'm in does it. The opening riff is played wrong 99% of the time....!

~Joe

And I'm 100% positive I'm part of the 99%...Should I protest? My ear sucks at note for note...

Phantom, Rocker & Slick did a great cover back in '85.

Simple search with Youtube, and here's the answer (for the guitar, anyway):

^ wow he looks old!

That's a promo clip though, doesn't really indicate what was used on the recording

Not to say that I wouldn't believe that it was a Tele or LP Junior

The last stanza is the best, describing the first few seconds after shots ring out; the way I hear it is :

"The DA was pumping my left hand, and she was a-holding my right. Well, I told her, "Don't get scared, 'cause you're gonna be spared. Well I've gotta be forgiven if I wanna spend my living with a long cool woman in a black dress."

Fixed it for 'ya (and of course there's more at the end of the stanza).

As a side note, it's interesting that so many people think they remember the phrase as "long tall woman in a black dress" even though that phrase is nowhere in the song. She is described as "tall" twice in the lyrics, but she's always that "long cool woman in a black dress".

For those interested, here are the lyrics:

Saturday night I was downtown
Working for the FBI
Sitting in a nest of bad men
Whisky bottles piling high

Bootlegging boozer on the west side
Full of people who are doing wrong
Just about to call up the DA man
When I heard this woman singing a song

A pair of 45's made me open my eyes
My temperature started to rise
She was a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9, beautiful tall
With just one look I was a bad mess
'Cos that long cool woman had it all

I saw her headin' to the table
Well a tall walking big black cat
When Charlie said I hope that you're able boy
Well I'm telling you she knows where it's at
Well suddenly we heard the sirens
And everybody started to run
A jumping out of doors and tables
Well I heard somebody shooting a gun

Well the DA was pumping my left hand
And then she was a-holding my right
Well I told her don't get scared
'Cos you're gonna be spared
Well I've gotta be forgiven
If I wanna spend my living
With a long cool woman in a black dress
Just a 5'9 beautiful tall
Well, with just one look I was a bad mess
'Cos that long cool woman had it all

Had it all... (repeated 8 times while fading out)

^ Nice! Couple other lines in there I had wrong. Thanks!

I think that's a great song, I love narrative tunes. It's like a GZA song

I always remember having a tough time learning the main riff 20 years ago or so.
The way I eventually got it kinda mutes the middle string in the chord. (the D string)
I have the open low E ringing throughout.
So with the low E ringing I have B & G#... C# & A... D & B... sometimes hammering on the G# note. You have to listen for the nuances.

The higher notes are played on the G string. Middle D string is muted.
This was the best I could get anyway.

I dont usually sing, but remember singing this song at friends house party and running out of breath by the time i got to the chorus . Take a deep breath during that pre chorus part. ( " a pair of 45's "...) 'cause by the time you get to the chorus your breath is gone. Mine anyway. lol.
